612 cabs

I have a chance to buy a pair of 612 cabs that I have no use for currently. The price is $40 so I'm tempted to buy them. My question is are these large enough to produce the kind of low bass that todays music has? I would probably use them for 604's or 605's.

That seems like a very good price for 612 cabs. I would get them ASAP. I use replica 612's with 604's, that were built as test cabs, and use this system for everything but classical and jazz. The bass sounds very good, good enough that I haven't ran to the CNC shop for a different design.

My heathkits are the same volume and they shake the house off the foundation with 604's!!!

612s are tuned to ~42 Hz, so figure an in-room F3 around 50 Hz with some room/boundary gain, making it too high for some of the more recent CD, DVD recordings I have.

I hope it can improve bass character of the units.
I like the sound color of 604 but it is little bit strong in mid and high and the bass is not deep enough for me. Another thing I am thinking to try is to change network. But I am not sure if it is worth to try. Because the real problem I have with my system is the size of the room. It is about 13 by 13 foot .

(I put the loudness swich on of my amplifier and feel the sound is better.)

A bigger cab will yield more LF gain, so more for the room to add to, especially if tuned lower. This should cover most, if not all, of the LF boost from one side of the loudness control's 'smiley face' EQ and depending on which XO you have, adding a HF bypass cap will allow some portion of the HF through unattenuated to mimic the other side of the 'smiley face'. Otherwise a more adjustable XO will be required to get the proper amount of CD horn EQ.

Another option if it's ever in the budget is to switch to a matching impedance tube amp that contour shapes the speaker's response to a 'smiley face' one that the loudness control is designed to mimic except without the efficiency loss that potentially will audibly increase harmonic distortion if played loud.

Hi,
I have been using original 612 cabs for years now! I use them with 416-8B with horns or with a duplex 604-8G using Altec 604-8G XO and it sounds incredible to me. My room is 24'x22' with about >=13 feet cathedral ceiling.

I like the 612's I have.. I have my 604-8G's back in them and they sound really nice.. If they are original Altec 612's grab them for $40 bucks !!! They are worth a lot more than that, especially the early versions.
